Fiber connections provide users with very fast, reliable internet. But, only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber internet connection. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that passed in November 2021 promises to bridge this digital divide, with $65 billion dedicated to expanding access to broadband internet to all Americans. Such government support, along with a number of other factors, have caused a spike in the demand for fiber products. CNBC visited Corning, the world’s largest manufacturer of optical fiber and North America’s largest producer of fiber optic cables to understand the technology behind fiber-optic internet and how the market for fiber products is changing.

Fiber-based networks make up the majority of the internet’s backbone. Fiber-optic subsea cables spanning thousands of miles connect continents together, exchanging data at nearly the speed of light. Meanwhile, the massive data centers that host all of our cloud-based applications also rely on fiber connections. Increasingly, these fiber connections are making their way directly into peoples’ homes, providing them with fast, reliable internet. But, only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber internet connection.

“In some instances, particularly in rural areas and very challenging geographies, it can be prohibitively expensive to to deploy fiber and it can be very expensive for households to pay for it,” says Julija Jurkevic, a senior research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Chinese sociologist Dr. Li Yi said in an October 16, 2020 speech delivered at the Shenzhenwan Dialogue Forum in Shenzhen, China that China would overtake the United States in GDP by 2027, and that COVID-19 has been harmful to the U.S. and Europe but beneficial to China and North Korea. He praised North Korea and its system for having “zero” COVID-19 infections and said that the number of COVID-19 deaths in China, which he claimed is 4,000, is virtually zero compared to America’s 220,000 deaths. In addition, Dr. Li Yi said that China is growing rapidly in economy, military, trade, and diplomacy, and that its development cannot be stopped, unless a Gorbachev-like leader comes to power “who would mess up China’s own internal affairs and cause China to disintegrate.” In addition, he said that most Americans hate China because it has pushed the U.S. into a corner, but he predicted that the U.S. will not sever diplomatic relations with China. Furthermore, he said that there will not be a war between the U.S. and China because they are both nuclear powers. He did, however, say that China has yet to take over Taiwan. Dr. Yi holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Illinois and according to his Linkedin account, he is a full-time professor at Renmin University in China. Following Dr. Yi’s October 16 speech, Renmin University issued a statement denying his employment at the university. Dr. Yi’s speech was uploaded to his personal YouTube account.

Veteran TV host Boy Abunda took an academic perspective in dissecting his former co-host and known close friend Toni Gonzaga’s interview with presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos.

Abunda, who is also a Communication Arts educator, enumerated the types of interviews, ranging from contrarian, investigative, educational, to promotional, among others.

Referring to Gonzaga’s controversial sit-down with Marcos, the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Abunda said, “To my mind, it was a friendly, almost familial [interview].”

“To a certain point, it may have been a PR interview. I am not sure, it is a guess. This is an interpretation,” he said.

Speaking with ABS-CBN News, Abunda then gave his take on why Gonzaga’s interview with Marcos has been “polarizing,” firstly pointing out that the subject is a contentious figure to begin with.

Abunda also discussed his recent interview with former House speaker and aspiring senator Alan Peter Cayetano, who has been criticized for his involvement in the forced broadcast shutdown of the TV host’s home network ABS-CBN.

Abunda revealed that he had set out to be contrarian, with the raw conversation lasting four hours, and with only half an hour of the interview making it to the final edit.
